The Sierra Nevada (Santa Marta) and Ciudad Perdida

Colombia is an outstanding country for backpacking. The Cordilleras Occidental, Central, and Oriental provide mountains high and rugged enough to satisfy any climber. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in the Cordillera Central is the highest coastal range of mountains. A rich variety of flora and fauna can be found in the dense rain forest covering the northern slopes. The southern slopes, inhabited by the Kogi and Arhuaco Indians, are drier and more accessible and consequently wildlife is scarce.

There are no continuous forest above 1,200 m. but trees grow along the rivers up to an altitude of about 1,700 m. These rivers forest becomes provide welcome shade for the hiker as well as a luxuriant display of airplants, vines, creepers, and flowers, especially at the higher altitudes where river forest becomes clod forshaded streams, including the spectacular irridiscent blue morpho. Birds are plentiful; parakeets argue from the treetops, and groups of orioles flash golden through the bushes.
