Almost
one-third of Colombia’s territory is covered by the Amazon Basin, an
area of thick tropical forest in the southeast, with no roads and
inhabited mostly by Indians. The most popular base for tourists wishing
to explore the area is Leticia, a small town with well-developed
tourist facilities, located on the banks of the Amazon River and close
to the border with Brazil and Peru. Jungle trips, notably to the nearby
Amacayu National Park, are widely available and often include visits to
Indian tribes.

- Canopy. It’s
hallucinating. One goes to the Tanimboca reservation, 8 kilometers from
Leticia and 45 meters from the floor. It’s a platform built among trees
where you can slide from one tree to another with help of a pulley .
The plan is to get to meet the other jungle, the one is perceived from
high where unsuspected birds, lizards and bugs lives. Finally if you
are a lucky man a star shower will bring warm feelings to your heart.
Again, it’s hallucinating.
- Natural Reservation Amacayacu National Park. Distant
from Leticia at least 3 or 4 hours going down river. There you will
find amazing eco-infrastructure that make us think that the jungle is
no longer inhospitable. Comfortable lodge, hammocks, restaurant,
paddling trough ravines, and fishing are some of the greatest
activities.
- Hunt for Caiman. It’s
very important to take a native with us. We need as well, a smooth
boat, a powerful lamp, and a lot of courage. We navigate at night
looking for a pair of red eyes. Once you got them on the sight they
stay freeze. The native throw him self over the reptile and grave him
from the neck. Then the rest of the crew can touch and see the caiman
before put him back into the river.
- "Mambiar" the coca plant - To chew the coca plant: At night when all sounds of the jungle are most splendid, the Natives often sit down to chew the coca plant and listen to ancient tales, one of the most pure jungle experiences.
- Tarapoto lakes: Take a picture of a pink dolphin. It’s almost impossible, despite they
live plentiful in the Amazon, they are very slippery as well.
- The island of the monkeys: An island with an army of primates coming from the trees to say hello.
If you don’t dear to touch them, don’t worry, they will handled to
touch you.
- Victorias Regias: The famous, the biggest floating plant on earth.
- Piranha fishing: The natives armed only with a stick and a piece of meat catch these
predators so you can admire them, specially their teeth. Then we put
them back into the river or lake, where they are abundant.
